How Old is God

How old is God? The quick answer is that God has no age. This notion might initially seem perplexing, considering that everything in our known universe has an age. It’s a concept that challenges our conventional understanding. After all, if God exists, then wouldn’t He too have an age? However, this perspective changes when we consider that God is eternal.

God Created Time

In the beginning god created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

God created the world, encompassing everything within it. He wasn’t merely a painter working on a blank canvas; rather, He crafted both the canvas and the painting itself.

It is widely accepted that time had a beginning with the onset of the physical world in an event known as the Big Bang. This implies that before the Big Bang, time did not exist. Therefore, the creator God of the universe existed prior to time and not part of time.

God is not Part of Time

If God created the heavens and the earth, then He exists in a realm where He is not bound by the parameters of time as we are. We have a beginning and an end; time is experienced only in one direction for us. However, since God exists outside of time, He has no beginning and no end, as these are concepts defined by time.

Thus, the question of how old God is becomes nonsensical. It’s akin to asking how sharp a sphere is. Therefore, God never ages, has never been born, and will never die. He is eternal.

Who Created God?

I have often heard this as a common retort when believers assert that God created the universe: “Then who created God?” However, this question is still based on the premise that we are all dependent on time, as creation is founded on the concept that something was absent and then came into existence. This notion itself relies on the concept of time. God, on the other hand, is not dependent on time, unlike everything else in the universe. Therefore, once again, this question is a categorical error.

Why Does it Matter That God Is Eternal?

Because God is eternal, that makes all the difference. It means that He knows both the past and the future. He perceives time not as a linear experience but comprehends everything simultaneously. This means that when He says He loves you, it signifies an eternal love. Similarly, when He makes promises, they extend for eternity. Unlike us mortal humans, our promises are always contingent on what the future holds. We may intend to keep them, but we can never be certain as we are unaware of what lies ahead. However, God knows. Thus, His promises are binding for all eternity.

Furthermore, as we have been given God’s word in the Bible, we know how the story ends. And it ends well for God and for those who are saved by Him. Therefore, the Bible’s prophecies of the future are not merely wishful thinking; they outline what will come to pass. Consequently, our hope is rooted in the truth of the Bible, not in speculation about what might occur.
