Why did Jesus come to Earth? He came to save humanity and establish His kingdom on Earth. For me, the implications of this are immense and crucial for my understanding of Christianity and the mission of Christ Jesus. It is this concept that helps me to grasp, in a more tangible way, the love of God and the purpose He has for humanity, and specifically for my life. Hopefully, by understanding this, you will share the same sentiment.
Jesus Saved Humanity from our sins
While this may seem like a clichéd response, I’d like to address some common misunderstandings. I understand that it can be challenging to see ourselves as sinners, particularly when we adhere to our country’s laws, pay our taxes, and generally strive to be good individuals. Personally, I sometimes view sin in this light, which makes me susceptible to understanding its true nature. Sin isn’t solely about following rules and demonstrating kindness; it extends beyond that, encompassing the concept of becoming disconnected from God, striving to be our own gods, and failing to follow God’s law both in action and in our hearts. It’s not just about doing the right thing; it’s about doing it with the right intentions and mindset. The fundamental issue remains that we have fallen short of God’s expectations.
While you might perceive God as being strict in demanding such high standards from us, it’s important to remember that He is a God of perfection, holiness, and justice. Anything less than that is considered ungodly. However, He is also a God of mercy, which is why Jesus came to earth. He came to pay the price for our sins and fulfill the justice of God. Jesus sacrificed His life so that we could have life.
Jesus is the key to bringing the Kingdom of God on Earth
What is the kingdom of God? It is the heavenly realm merging with our earthly existence, where God reigns as the ultimate king.
Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6: 9-10
Prior to sin, Earth and the kingdom of God were unified. However, due to sin, they have become separate realms. Jesus’ mission was to bring heaven to Earth. Heaven is not merely another destination we reach after death; rather, it is the realization of the kingdom of God on Earth.
Jesus extensively taught about what living in the kingdom entails. It involves loving not only our neighbors but also our enemies. It encompasses purity of heart and mind, coupled with grace and mercy. In this kingdom, there is no death or sickness. Jesus exemplified this through His actions, such as healing the sick, confronting the powerful, uplifting the poor, and ultimately sacrificing Himself for our sake.
This video sums this concept up well.
Jesus Shows us the Way to Life
Jesus is not only divine but also human; He embodies the perfect human. Scripture often describes Him as the new Adam, illustrating how He showed us the way to live life. Some may wonder, “Why doesn’t God simply tell us how to live?” I once heard an analogy that beautifully addresses this question.
Imagine a bird trapped in a barn, fluttering in every direction in search of an escape route. The farmer arrives to assist the bird. Initially, he tries to use a broom to gently guide the bird toward the exit by sweeping the ceiling. However, this only frightens the bird, causing it to avoid the broom altogether. The farmer then attempts to drive the bird outside by blowing a horn, but again, the bird remains too scared to move. Finally, the farmer tries to lure the bird with seeds, yet its fear prevents it from even considering eating. It then dawns on the farmer that if he were a bird himself, he could lead the lost bird to freedom. In this realization, the farmer recognizes the profound analogy of God descending in human form to show us the path to true liberation.
Jesus Came to Serve
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2: 5-8
Jesus came to serve. He taught us that the kingdom of God is contrary to our earthly perspective—that the first shall be last and the last shall be first. He demonstrated that the greatest act of all is to serve one another. Jesus, the Son of God, exemplified this through the ultimate sacrifice: He came to lay down His life for us.
I am reminded of this whenever I feel entitled. How can I feel this way when the God and creator of the universe came to serve me.
Jesus Came for the Lost
Jesus did not spend His time with the rich and powerful to change the world. Instead, He devoted Himself to the lowly, the sinners, and the lost. He came to bring sight to the blind, both literally and figuratively, and to illuminate an otherwise dark world. He is a beacon of light, revealing not only the truth of our sins but also the truth of our nature.
Because Jesus came to earth we know God loves us
Is God a personal God who is interested in our lives, or is He uninterested and indifferent to the plight of humanity? Did He create the world and then leave it to fend for itself? Due to the evil in the world, some believe that either God does not exist or that He is indifferent. However, because Jesus came to Earth, we know that He loves us, cares for us, and is certainly not indifferent to our plight.
Jesus answered this not only by descending as the Son of God, worthy of greatness, but also by coming to suffer and die for no other reason than to save sinners. Imagine a king descending from his throne to enter the ghetto of his kingdom, not with power and strength, but as one of them, to save them and bring peace. This is what Jesus does, revealing to us the character of God.
Conclusions
In this dark world, God appeared to us to bear witness that He loves us, cares for our lives, and desires us to have eternal life with Him. Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son, came to proclaim good news, not to bring judgment, but to show us mercy and grace. This is the reason why Jesus came down to earth. He came to offer us a free gift and proclaim liberty. I hope that understanding why Jesus came to earth will bring clarity and peace.
Upon meditating on the good news of Jesus coming to earth, I have
