I have noticed there are common traits of confident people. Although some can fabricate an appearance of confidence, sometimes there are cracks in the facade and their insecurities peak through. I have always struggled with confidence. Not being self assured and always second guessing my decisions and actions. Because of this I have always admired those that had real confidence that are not skin deep. Here are a list of important traits of confident people and how Christ helps you be a self confident person.
1. Being Kind to the Weak
Confident people are kind, but particularly to those that have less or no social standing. They are self assured and have no reason to belittle or overpower the vulnerable. As it is often the case that insecure people bring people down to make themselves feel better. That is not the case in truly confident people.
2. Gentle Honesty
Honesty is an attribute of confident people. Although being honest can show one’s vulnerabilities, a confident person is not afraid of being vulnerable. However, honesty is a virtue, but brutal honesty is not. There is a time and place for honest opinions and critiques to be voiced, but if they are voiced to put one down then this is a sign of weakness. A confident person knows when honesty will be helpful, kind, necessary, or when it is for the greater good.
3. Sincerely Curious
Individuals with high self-esteem often exhibit curiosity. Confident people, by nature, tend to embody self-forgetfulness. They aren’t constantly preoccupied with themselves. In contrast, when someone is hyper-focused on their insecurities, it hinders curiosity beyond their own concerns. Self-assured individuals, free from such preoccupations, show genuine interest in others, the world, and everything around them. Their confidence allows them to explore and engage with the world without being hindered by self-centered thoughts.
4. Sense of Humor
A self-confident person possesses a sense of humor, understanding that jokes are simply jokes and not easily taking offense. Even when humor is directed at them, they can appreciate the humor beyond any potential offense. Their lack of a constant need for others’ approval demonstrates that jokes at their expense don’t affect them as much as someone with low self-esteem.
5. Willing to take Calculated Risks
Taking risks is an attribute for confident people. They are not careless but measured about their risk. Taking risks is not a pursuit for self glory, but simply because it makes the most sense. They are not shackled by negative thoughts on what could be and are more open minded to see the wonderful possibilities out there.
6. Not Afraid to Ask for Help or Voice an Opinion
Confident people look for answers. They are bound by the approval from others so they are not afraid to ask for help. They are not afraid to be vulnerable when they are in need. For the same reason they also are not afraid to voice their opinion.
7. Admit When they are Wrong
Confident people know how to handle criticism. Because of this they can easily admit when they are wrong. Because their sense of themselves is secure, being wrong does not bring them down. Highly confident people in fact desire to be told how to improve themselves because their ultimate goal is not to increase their self worth.
How Christ helps you Become Confident
Christ is the best way to improve one’s confidence. If God was not real, then in fact all of us are just vying for our place in the world. It would make more sense that our self confidence and worth would come from our abilities, accomplishments, or appearance (triple a) because that is all we have going for us. But if God is real and he has made us for a reason, then in this cosmic symphony our sense of worth is not dependent on our strengths, but rather on God’s strength. Our value is based on the value that our creator has already placed on us. To expand on this further here are the ways that Christ helps improve out confidence.
1. Christ Helps us be Kind to the Weak
Confident individuals derive their confidence from being self-assured, while followers of Christ find their confidence in being assured by Christ. True confidence doesn’t stem from recognizing one’s own great abilities but rather from understanding that Christ possesses perfect abilities. Those confident in Christ acknowledge their weaknesses without shame, recognizing that it is through these weaknesses that they are drawn to Jesus. With the assurance of God’s mercy through Jesus, they are confident that their deeds won’t lead to condemnation but to a greater need for grace, which is freely given. Thus, those confident in Christ don’t dwell in misery but stand tall on the shoulders of Christ, who lifts them up.
Understanding their own weakness yet finding confidence in Christ, individuals confident in Christ demonstrate empathy towards the weak. They recognize their own vulnerabilities without shame, and as a result, they extend kindness to their fellow brothers and sisters who share this commonality of weakness. Instead of viewing the weak as individuals to trample upon, they approach them with understanding and kindness because they see themselves in them.
2. Christ helps with honesty
When your self worth is not based on the triple a’s (abilities, accomplishments, and appearance) you have no other motivation but the truth. There is no need for selfish gains, to secure an advantage, or to avoid vulnerabilities, all of which are common reasons for dishonesty. Jesus thus helps one to be more honest.
3. Christ Followers are Curious
In Tim Kellers short book, the Freedom of Self Forgetfulness, he describes how Christ compels people to forget about themselves. Christ confident people are not preoccupied of what others think of them, or the trivial pursuits of self glory. Because of this there is a pleasant freedom of living without the burdens of the ego. This frees them to be curious of the world and are able to focus on the people they meet and are fascinated with what God has created.
4. Christ Confident People Can Take a Joke
Christ confident people do not see themselves with high standings, so they are not easily offended when people joke about them. Their feelings are secure enough that a joke can simply be a joke.
5. Confident Followers of Christ are Bold
Confident followers of Christ embody a harmonious balance of humility and boldness. While acknowledging their own weaknesses, they find boldness in Christ, shielded from common fears such as rejection, pain, and death. This assurance in Christ diminishes the barriers created by fear, enabling them to approach challenging or intimidating situations with courage.
6. Christ Helps People Speak Up
People confident in Christ are not burdened by negative self-talk. Their mindset isn’t preoccupied with boosting a fragile self-esteem. Consequently, they are comfortable seeking help when needed, recognizing that their life mantra is grounded in the acknowledgment of their dependence on God. Operating under a different set of standards and boldly standing against societal norms, they feel empowered to speak up when necessary.
7. Christ Confident Followers Admit when they are Wrong
Being wrong is okay; making mistakes is an inevitable part of life. Confident individuals in Christ even acknowledge their failures more readily than most. Since their self-esteem isn’t rooted in personal abilities, accomplishments, or appearance, but rather in Christ’s, being wrong doesn’t shatter their ego. It’s simply seen as a natural aspect of human life.
Conclusion
Confidence is a highly sought-after quality, and there are numerous ways to become confident or at least appear to be so. However, true confidence blossoms when you address the root causes of your insecurities. Through Christ, these root causes are not only addressed but also remedied. Consider your walk in Christ, where your strength is derived from, and perhaps, as a byproduct, you will exhibit the traits of a confident person.
